The unique ability to quickly see outcomes and associations across long timespans and within large datasets and patient populations helps the team establish clear trends and discern new, authoritative insights. The fast generation of data-driven insights combined with a user’s clinical knowledge results in more insightful queries and a more accessible and repeatable research process.

The early success of Intermountain’s chronic kidney disease (CKD) program has led to other initiatives targeting coronary artery disease, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and opioids in surgery, all of which are paying significant dividends. Intermountain has closed gaps in cardiovascular care, resulting in reductions in cardiac events, which created savings of over $7M annually.

Real-World Scenarios

Chronic Kidney Disease

Seventy percent of late-stage renal disease patients at Intermountain Healthcare were “crashing” into dialysis unaware of their disease — a worst-case scenario for both patients and the bottom line. Intermountain set out to reduce hospitalizations and prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality by identifying and engaging patients in the early stages of CKD.

Diabetes

With the results of its patient population in hand, Intermountain will be able to define an action plan for its business and change how it makes care available to patients across all diabetes care locations. This will help patients become more compliant with their care plans, prescriptions, and follow-up visits.

Radiation Cystitis

This study delves into the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HB02) therapy in mitigating these challenges, specifically examining its impact on mortality rates and the necessity for blood transfusions among affected patients. By analyzing data from a large healthcare system, the research highlights the potential benefits of HB02 therapy, emphasizing the importance of timely intervention and the correlation between the number of therapy sessions and improved patient outcomes.

The Power of Data Exploration

“Gathering good patient data is essential to our mission, but the key is unlocking it to pull out the most meaningful information and apply it in ways that bring value to the caregiver, the health system, and most importantly, the patient.”

Viet Le, MPAS, PA-C, FACC, FAHA, Associate Professor of Research/Cardiology Research, Intermountain Healthcare

“Intermountain is revolutionizing patient care by embracing access to data, staying curious, and digging into information to find answers. Their focus on evidence-informed health has empowered caregivers to integrate data with experience toward better outcomes.”
