We need to engage with all persons across the great state of Tennessee to work towards integrated and interoperable technology solutions to improve the health status of our citizens.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

A: I have been in healthcare for 22 years between life sciences and technology. I started out based in Montgomery, Alabama, and then moved to Spring Hill, Tennessee, in 2013. In 2021, I joined the team at MDClone and now work with healthcare organizations to learn about the possibilities of progressive research and improved patient care with the MDClone ADAMS Platform.

I have seen healthcare technology transform over the years, from watching organizations simply implement electronic health record (EHR) systems to build digital patient records to working with AI prediction modeling to aid with patient care. Watching health information technology (HIT) grow and develop has been amazing, and I know we are still at the beginning of this journey.

Brad joined the Tennessee Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Chapter in 2018 and joined the board of directors in 2019. He was named President-Elect of Tennessee HIMSS in 2021 and is the incoming President for the 2022–24 term.

Q: What is the Tennessee HIMSS Chapter?

A: The Tennessee Chapter of HIMSS is dedicated to educational programs and the advancement of health information technology professionals. TN HIMSS is one of the leading chapters in the nation, with nearly 2,000 members. TN HIMSS works to improve healthcare by providing leadership for professional growth, workforce development, and advocacy related to HIT. We align expertise and resources to grow our region’s HIT talent pool and knowledge base. Members include HIT professionals, clinicians, and business leaders. We have a great leadership team that is focused on developing the next generation of HIT leadership in Tennessee and across the nation.

Q: What is the focus of the Tennessee HIMSS Chapter in 2022–23?

A: Our chapter and its members are focused on professional growth, workforce development, and advocacy related to HIT in the state of Tennessee. We have a very robust programming and events schedule where there is something for everyone. We conduct professional development events, and we also host a number of fun networking events.

We are trying to make sure that the entire state is engaged. A lot of focus is in Nashville — where a majority of our state’s healthcare facilities are. But this year, we are trying to regain momentum from the slowdown caused by COVID-19. We are excited to bring events to our members that create opportunities for networking and help individuals re-engage. There are a lot of changes happening in the world of HIT, and we want to stay relevant to our sponsor organizations and the members of HIMSS

Q: What are you most looking forward to as the incoming President

A: It will be exciting to help shape the next generation of HIMSS leadership and develop healthcare professionals that will further the conversation of IT in healthcare. Tennessee HIMSS is doing great work throughout the state, and I am eager to keep that momentum going with new internal initiatives and succession plans, as well as keeping the content we provide to our members relevant.

Q: What kind of impact would you like to see made in the healthcare space?

A: Making sure that HIT keeps pace with IT in general. Because of all the different things we have to worry about in healthcare (protected health information, security, etc.), it’s been difficult to be cutting edge. Educating our members and organizations about the importance of HIT and stressing the impact it can have on improving patient care are top priorities. We want to make sure people are on the same page and realize there is an opportunity to learn from one another, work together, and transform healthcare overall.

Q: What does healthcare innovation mean to you?

A: Innovation can mean a variety of different things for different organizations. For some, it’s inward-focused: How do we engage with patients (i.e., telehealth: how they are capturing messages?) Then, there’s innovation that is more focused on employees (i.e., How they are able to interact with patients: a nurse being able to monitor vital signs with a tablet rather than having to go to wake the patient up and take a blood pressure).

For other organizations, innovation is defined with an outward focus. Sometimes this is research-based innovation around how they form data, receive data, and use data. Sometimes, it’s how they are working with other organizations and third parties for overall healthcare improvement solutions. For example, MDClone’s solution supports external innovation — connecting organizations with other organization’s data assets to build on their ability to do research or develop technology that will aid in patient care.

Innovation means a lot of things to a lot of different people, and the Tennessee HIMSS Chapter is working to address the topic from all angles.
